Elsie Jane is Going to Be A Therapy Dog
We have decided to train Elsie Jane to be a therapy dog. Before then, she will take the AKC Canine Good Canine test. I have been working on her training, but she is not quite ready for the test yet. After that test, we will pick a therapy dog program for her. Elsie Jane is the most laid-back dog I have ever had. Her temperament would be perfect for a therapy dog.
What is a Therapy Dog?
01
Trained
Therapy dogs go through special training before they can be certified. This is in addition to basic training.
02
Calm
Therapy dogs have a calm temperament and are friendly.
03
Obedient
Therapy dogs are obedient and listen to their handlers commands.
According to the American Kennel Club, “therapy dogs are dogs who go with their owners to volunteer in settings such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. From working with a child who is learning to read to visiting a senior in assisted living, therapy dogs and their owners work together as a team to improve the lives of other people.”
I can’t wait to get Elsie Jane started on this journey. I am still researching which organization I want to the do the actual therapy dog training/registration with, there are so many options!
